Empowering Lives, Driving Change
Multiple Sclerosis New Zealand (MSNZ) is committed to supporting, promoting, and sharing research that advances understanding, treatment, and care for people living with MS.
We work closely with the New Zealand Multiple Sclerosis Research Trust (NZMSRT) and other partners to foster research that will make a difference for people with MS in Aotearoa and beyond.
New Zealand Multiple Sclerosis Research Trust (NZMSRT)
The NZMSRT was established in 2015 to stimulate and support New Zealand-based research into the cause, prevention, treatment, and ultimate cure of MS.
The Trust funds a wide range of research projects and provides grants and scholarships to support clinicians, scientists, and students working in the MS field.
Key Initiatives includes
Major Research Grants
Funding of up to NZ$150,000 over three years is available to support neurologists and researchers undertaking MS research, including fellowships in New Zealand or overseas for those intending to return and specialise in MS.
Funding is also available for non-clinical scientists and more limited training or research projects.
Monica Mackley MS Nursing Education Fund
This fund supports registered New Zealand nurses specialising in neurology and MS to further their education and expertise, including travel, course fees, and related costs.
The 2024 grant is $3,000, with applications closing 30 May 2025.
MSBase Project
NZMSRT spearheads and funds MSBase in New Zealand, providing researchers access to the world’s largest repository of longitudinal, anonymised MS patient data.
This enables New Zealand researchers to contribute to and benefit from global MS research, improving patient outcomes.
National Registry Feasibility Study
The Trust is currently funding a feasibility study to establish a national registry of all people with MS in New Zealand.
A vital step for research, resource allocation, and improving care.
Scholarships and Community-Led Research
NZMSRT supports scholarships for students and community-led research initiatives, such as the recent $32,000.
Master’s Research Scholarship for MS research at Victoria University of Wellington.
