Adventure, Grit, and Heart: Meet Team Murray Sisters

Hi, I’m Sarah Murray; adventure racer, shearing contractor, mum of three boys, happily married and proud team captain of Team Murray Sisters. Life is busy, full of family, work, and racing, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I’ve spent the last 15 years immersed in adventure racing, marathons, and endurance events. The adrenaline, the challenge, and the joy of pushing myself to the edge – that’s what drives me.

In 2021, I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. It was a shock, but I made a choice: MS wouldn’t define me or stop me from doing what I love. So, I continued through the pain and fatigue. I show up, I race, and I keep going – for myself, my family, and anyone facing their own challenges.

This November, I’m honoured to be leading our team in the One NZ GODZONE Pursuit in Marlborough, thanks to a sponsored entry from the PURE ADVENTURE Charitable Trust and Spring Challenge. We were selected by Spring Challenge founders Jodie and Nathan Fa’avae ONZM from a pool of incredible entries across the country.

Nathan shared, “We’ve put the Murray sisters at the top of our choice. They’ve been loyal Spring Challenge entrants, are a tough group of women, and they’ve also already entered in the Glenorchy Spring Challenge next month. We think this is an amazing opportunity for this team to experience GODZONE Pursuit and feel sure they will be finishers.”

Our team is made up of four passionate, determined women – all mums, all working full-time, and all absolutely addicted to adventure racing:

• Me, Sarah Murray – I’m our team captain. I may be an MS warrior, but I bring energy, resilience, and motivation to every race.
• Carla Murray – My sister-in-law, a world surf lifesaving champion, PE teacher, and our team’s navigator. She’s strong, fierce, and a constant inspiration.
• Michelle Rochford – A personal trainer, admin mining worker, and boot camp host. She’s our packhorse and brings honesty, grit, and heart to every race.
• Natalie Harrex – A PE coordinator and experienced racer with a great vibe and sharp instincts. She’s our backup navigator and brings energy and personality to the team.

We’ve raced together many times and know each other’s strengths, quirks, and limits – and we push past them together. As a team, we bring determination, honesty, strength, and a whole lot of personality.

For me, sport and fitness are how I conquer life. I tell myself every day, “Hey, I’m not dying.” I choose to show up – and I will continue to show up.

We’re proud to represent Spring Challenge at GODZONE and will give it everything we’ve got until we cross that finish line.

The race kicks off on 27th November 2025. Follow our journey on Facebook for training updates and behind-the-scenes moments. You won’t want to miss it!
