Summer in New Zealand is a season of sunshine, beaches, and family gatherings. For those living with MS, it can also bring unique challenges, especially when the temperatures rise. Heat doesn’t cause harm, but it can make symptoms worsen, leaving you feeling drained just when you want to enjoy the festivities. With a little planning and some clever strategies, we hope you can make this summer not only manageable but truly enjoyable.
Plan Ahead for a Stress-Free Holiday
The holiday season often means packed calendars and extra errands. Add MS into the mix, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Start by planning early: make sure your prescriptions are filled before pharmacies close for the holidays, and check when your local MS society takes its break so you can get any advice or support ahead of time. Hospitals and urgent care will still be there if you need them, but a little foresight can save a lot of stress.
Manage Stress and Fatigue
Stress and fatigue are unwelcome guests at any celebration. Give yourself permission to slow down. If you’re hosting, share the load and let others bring a dish or help with decorations. Space out social events so you have time to recharge and stick to your usual health routine as much as possible. A short walk, a balanced meal, and a good night’s sleep can make all the difference. And yes, enjoy the treats of the season, but listen to your body and indulge in moderation.
Stay Cool and Comfortable This Summer
When the temperature rises, MS symptoms can feel more intense. This is called Uhthoff’s phenomenon, and while it’s temporary, it can put a damper on your plans. The trick is to stay cool. If you’re heading to the beach or other outdoor activities, go early in the morning when it’s still cool and the crowds are thin. Pack a chilly drink and a mist spray bottle to refresh your face. A portable fan in your bag can be a lifesaver. At home, keep rooms ventilated and take cool showers when needed. Cooling scarves, vests, or gel packs can be game-changers, and don’t forget hydration, water is your best friend.
Summer is meant to be enjoyed. With a little planning and some smart cooling strategies, you can make the most of the season without letting MS hold you back. Focus on what matters most, time with loved ones, moments of joy, and embrace the warmth with confidence and care.
