The Ministry of Social Development (MSD) is seeking feedback on the draft Carers’ Strategy Action Plan, which sets out government actions to support family, whānau, aiga, or individual carers.
In Census 2023, 500,000 people identified as providing informal or unpaid care – but the real number is likely much higher. Many people do not recognise themselves as ‘carers’ yet still need access to targeted support.
We strongly encourage our members, their carers, and whānau to submit their input. Every submission will help shape actions included in the programme of work across all government agencies involved.
The draft Action Plan focuses on three priority areas:
-
Recognition and appreciation
-
Health and wellbeing
-
Financial security
Feedback will help inform the final Action Plan and the governments priorities related to carers needs.
There are several ways to share your thoughts: attend online or in-person workshops, complete a quick survey, or send an email.
Consultation runs until 12 March 2026. Your voice matters – share your feedback today and help shape a plan that truly supports carers across Aotearoa.
