When Nick Allen first began experiencing symptoms at just 18, he never imagined the path he was about to walk. What started as weakness in his legs, bladder issues, and unusual sensations quickly escalated into debilitating fatigue, cognitive problems, pain, balance issues, and visual processing difficulties. Yet despite years of symptoms, multiple medical appointments, MRI scans, and significant impacts on his daily life, a clear diagnosis remained elusive.
In his early twenties, while studying overseas, Nick experienced a major neurological event that forced him to return home. Several years later, after worsening symptoms and loss of mobility, he was initially diagnosed with primary progressive MS. The neurologist at the time delivered the news bluntly and without hope—predicting rapid decline and wheelchair use within a few years.
But that wasn’t the end of the story.
Eight years after his PPMS diagnosis, his symptoms began to change and, after a reevaluation of his symptoms, Nick received a new diagnosis of Functional Neurological Disorder (FND). This re-diagnosis provided clarity and a renewed sense of agency: while his symptoms were real and life-changing, they were also manageable with the right interventions, rehabilitation, and support. Inspired by the possibility of reclaiming his life, Nick began exploring diet, rehabilitation, and holistic approaches to managing his condition.
Watch Nick’s interview to hear his story in his own words:
With guidance from an exercise physiologist, he slowly rebuilt balance, mobility, and strength. He eventually sold his mobility scooter, regained access to the outdoors he loved, and began walking, tramping, and even climbing again.
By 2015, Nick had spent thousands of hours rehabilitating in the gym and was strong enough to take on serious mountaineering goals. He headed to the Himalayas, climbed Island Peak, and raised funds to launch Mastering Mountains — a charitable trust supporting people with MS and other neurological conditions to pursue outdoor goals and access specialized rehabilitation.
Over the last decade, Mastering Mountains has:
-
Supported 16 people with MS
-
Provided over $50,000 in neuro-physiotherapy and exercise physiology funding
-
Built a mentoring programme that walks alongside participants through the highs, lows, victories, and frustrations of managing neurological conditions
-
Helped people not only achieve outdoor goals but develop lifelong tools for pacing, managing fatigue, rebuilding confidence, and fostering hope
Nick’s motivation stems from two key experiences:
-
The sense of hopelessness he felt during his initial diagnosis and early interactions with specialists
-
The lack of community for people who have neurological conditions and love the outdoors
Mastering Mountains now fills that gap — a place where people with neurological conditions can find support, encouragement, and the belief that meaningful adventure is still possible.
Today, as Mastering Mountains celebrates its 10-year anniversary, Nick reflects on how far he’s come, both personally and with the trust. MS New Zealand continues to be an important support, particularly through the early years of establishing the organisation.
Nick’s story is one of determination, community, and the transformative power of hope. His journey is a reminder that while neurological conditions bring change, they don’t have to bring an end to the things that matter.
