Vacancies – Seeking New Independent Committee Members

Multiple Sclerosis New Zealand (MSNZ) is currently seeking interest from new Independent Committee Members with particular skills in either Fundraising, Corporate Sponsorship and Marketing, or Health and/or Government Advocacy.

Multiple Sclerosis New Zealand is the National organisation supporting 18 independent Regional Societies nationally. The National Executive Committee provides governance to the small team of employees led by the National Manager.

MSNZs purpose is to deliver advocacy, information, awareness, education so people living with MS can independently live their best lives. We do this by collaborating with member organisations to provide a voice for people with Multiple Sclerosis, their families and carers through leadership, advocacy, communication, and national and international collaboration.

We endeavour to deliver our services with understanding, collaboration, clarity, purpose and trust.

This is a volunteer role but expenses are reimbursed.

 

Person Specification
Individuals are sought who have a strong empathy with our mission. Specific knowledge of multiple sclerosis is not necessary.

Experience, skills, and expertise in the various areas is beneficial:

  • Fundraising
  • Corporate sponsorship
  • Marketing
  • Health and/or government advocacy
  • Health governance
  • National leadership
  • Community based services
  • Chronic health or disability care

 

Experience

  • Ideally, successful experience of operating within a board or committee in a charitable, public sector or commercial entity, particularly in the broader health sector. If limited experience, a good understanding of governance responsibilities will be considered.
  • Demonstrable experience of building and sustaining relationships with key stakeholders and colleagues to achieve objectives
  • A proven track record of sound judgement and effective decision making
  • A history of impartiality, fairness and the ability to respect confidences
  • A track record of commitment to promoting equality and diversity

 

Knowledge, skills and understanding

  • Commitment to the Society and a willingness to devote the necessary time and effort
  • Preparedness to make unpopular recommendations to the Committee, and a willingness to speak their mind, based on sound analysis
  • Understanding of requirement to put personal views aside to reach consensus in decisions which best meet the Society’s needs
  • Willingness to be available for subcommittee or portfolio responsibilities as required
  • Good, independent judgement and strategic vision
  • An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of Committee membership
  • An ability to work effectively as a member of a team
  • An understanding of the respective roles of the Chair, Committee Members, and Management

 

Meetings
3-4 face to face meetings are held a year. These are all day meetings. Costs relating to travel and catering are funded by MSNZ for Committee Members. If a 2 day meeting MSNZ also arrange accommodation if required.

Meetings are usually held in Christchurch however from time to time and due to circumstances this may change.

Selection will be by interview. Round 1 by Zoom and Round 2 in person at an agreed time and location with recommendation to Board from there.
