Multiple Sclerosis: Looking towards the future of MS treatments

September 18, 2017 | Advocacy, Education, Event, Treatments, Uncategorised

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic neurological condition of the central nervous system affecting 4000 New Zealanders and with 134 new people being diagnosed each year. While the exact cause and cure of MS is currently unknown, there are treatments available, for some forms, helping to manage the condition, halt disease progression, and prevent relapses and the accumulation of disability. A number of these treatments are currently available in NZ but with restrictions to the entry and exit criteria. As part of Multiple Sclerosis NZ’s 50th Anniversary we are holding a free public education lecture evening on the future of MS treatments.

The evening will address the importance of early diagnosis and treatment as being crucial for limiting and managing the often irreversible, progressive deterioration that people with MS experience. Associate Professor Tomas Kalincik, of Melbourne University, will discuss the role that treatments can play in targeting and preventing disability and the future of these.

With growing evidence to support the role that Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant (HSCT) can play in treating MS and increasing numbers of New Zealanders going abroad for treatment, MSNZ is bringing prominent international expert Dr Riccardo Saccardi to NZ to discuss how this treatments benefits people with MS and who research shows would respond well.
