Blood-brain barrier

A semi-permeable layer around blood vessels in the brain and spinal cord that prevents large molecules, immune cells, and disease-causing organisms (e.g. viruses) from passing out of the blood stream into the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). A temporary break in the blood-brain barrier occurs as part of the inflammatory process in MS.
