A coating (sheath) of nerve fibres that is composed of lipids (fats) and protein. Myelin serves as insulation and as an aid to efficient nerve fibre conduction. When myelin is damaged in MS, nerve fibre conduction is faulty or absent, with impaired bodily functions or altered sensations the result.
